Bringing a water filter with you – one that has a pump that pulls the water up through the filter, and that pours the filtered water into your water bottle – is one option that can especially come in handy; although these filters will cost more than other water purification methods, you will be able to easily filter your water as you backpack, without having to alter the water’s taste, and without having to carry a lot of extra weight! Another option for purifying water (certainly a lighter option, and a less expensive one) is for you to put iodine or water purification tablets to use; for as little as $10 or $15, you can purchase enough in the way of iodine crystals to last you for months, and for even less money you can purchase military-grade water purification tablets that you can simply drop in water, wait a bit, and drink! You might not know what you are missing if you haven’t ever cooked on an open flame. This can be both artful and technical at the same time. There are some great tools that can help you out along the way.
If you can get a good set of cast iron pans you will find your cooking skills will increase. The nice thing about cast iron is it distributes even heat even when the coals you are cooking on may provide uneven heat. It works great for cooking eggs, pancakes, and bacon off of.
Another great trick is wrapping veggies such as potatoes and corn on the cob (with the husk still on that has been soaked in water) in aluminum foil and putting them right in the hot white coals. After you finish cooking your steak, you can pull out the veggies to go along with it. We loved using the cast iron sandwich makers as kids to make hot pie filled treat, grilled cheese, etc. You can use what ever filling you want and simply place a piece of buttered breat on either side of the cast iron. You simply close the sandwich maker and place over the fire. This can really make for some great eats. A rotisserie and grill grate is also a handy tool to cook on. This combination tool provides a grill grate to cook on along with the capability of running a rotisserie by hand. This is great for roasted chicken.
